Mr. Sluss was a tough teacher -- especially for a kid who was used to getting A's fairly easily in his other subjects. In his class, you had to earn it.

More memorable for me was my time on the REFLECTOR II yearbook staff -- crazy deadline Saturdays, and being able to take study halls in the yearbook editor's office, Rob Brunk for 1988 and Steve Smith for 1989. In between classes and sometimes while his students were taking a test, Mr. Sluss would look in on us in that office right off his classroom and share some of his wisdom in an off-the-record capacity.

A great human being who taught me more than he might even realize. I use his advice and his example on a daily basis, and anyone who had the privilege of his instruction definitely learned what it is to THINK and not just memorize.

It's 1972. It's the last weekend before "The Term Paper" was due. I was a panic! Did Mr. Sluss say if there were four or more lines it needed
to be separated into its own paragraph...or was it five lines? I got out my notes. I can't figure it out! I will be so humiliated if I don't get an A!!
I started calling Marsha (Jackson), Peggie (Stubbs), Connie (Wallace) Miller! BINGO! She knew what to do! I finished that term paper on our old fashioned
typewriter and plenty of footnotes and a reference page. I learned so much in Mr. Sluss's class!! It helped me so much to be successful at The Ohio State
University.I have spent many hours writing papers for my Bachelors and Masters Degrees. But I never worked harder than on Mr.Sluss's
"The Term Paper". Thank you Mr. Sluss!!!

Paul Sluss! How I wish I had appreciated his love of history more when I had the chance! Now I find myself watching the history channel and thinking, Paul Sluss would have more to say than they do!
I tried to make him laugh, by answering "Abraham Lincoln" whenever I didn't know the name of the person on a fill in the blank. He made me stay after class and asked me why I kept doing that. "Because, maybe, just maybe, it will make you chuckle at the absurdity of the answer and when you are wavering on my essay, I'll get the bonus point for having put you in a good mood." He smiled, but I don't think it ever got me a bonus point.
Because we hosted exchange students, Paul was often a guest at our house for dinner, and even played some Euchre with us. He was just as tough at cards!
I really do wish I could sit in on all his lectures again now, and take notes with wild abandon!
